Mirantis Open Stack Installation with Fuel and Virtual Box - Part 1

I was keen to experiment with open stack and also compare it with other cloud platforms like AWS etc. I had tried installing Vanilla Open Stack from devstack and RDO installations earlier but ended up being futile exercises due to either faulty (or ignorant!) hardware setup on my side or some mess in the procedures followed.

But any way, I came across Mirantis Open Stack installation using Fuel and found it to be rather simple and faster. The hardware requirements were clear and able to meet with my windows 7 laptop with Intel i5/ 8GB RAM.

I opted for installation through Oracle Virtual Box scripts which automates everything from creation of  host only network interfaces to creation of VM for fuel master and fuel slave nodes (which later become open stack controller , computer etc nodes)

https://www.mirantis.com/how-to-install-openstack/

To my utter surprise , i found the scripts to non starter as it got blocked in the initial steps of removing any existing virtualbox host only adaptors. After some shell script debugging and corrections in the scripts, I managed to install the default setup. You can find the modified scripts in the link below.

https://drive.google.com/open?id=1RkpuTGmwRLVHl_0zLOY2X0_wf0gCG7L6

As it stands i still could not manage to run/install them through a single script as it was intended). so you can follow below steps to complete the installation (I choose 8GB scripts as I have only 8GB ram in my laptop)

Go to the folder/directory in the extracted zip file where you can see below scripts and run these commands

>> sh launch_8GBfuel_master.sh

This installs fuel master VM after creating all required host adapters / NAT adapters etc.

Fuel set up UI, take care to configure NAT adapter in eth1 settings and DNS settings for your setup for external network access. Other wise you will have issues to build a bootstrap image.

Only VM is up with login screen, kill this script with CTRL-C and move to next step

>>  sh launch_fuel_master_1_5.sh  -- (Some more steps to enable internet access for fuel master)
>> sh  launch_fuel_master_2.sh  -- ( Some more steps to install master node public keys)

Above steps complete Fuel master installation

Now create fuel slave nodes with below command

>> sh launch_8GBfuel_slave.sh

You are going to have a set up which looks like below (after creating of 1 controller and 2 compute nodes )

All above interfaces are on virtual box host only adapters except for a NAT adapter configured on Fuel master node for internet access (to create boot strap image and new open stack installations from network repositories)

Major dis advantage with above set up is that any external access to VM instances or even to Open Stack API endpoints (Horizon , Keystone etc) have to be on host only network with in same PC and same existing network (172.16.0.0/24).

If your laptop has 16GB RAM, you can install Open source MANO (OSM) and deploy your VNF packages on this open stack to create your network services.(https://osm.etsi.org/wikipub/index.php/OSM_Release_FOUR)

But if you need to really access this from external machine than the laptop (OSM setup), Then deployment has to be different than above setup which I will explain in Part 2.

How to transfer contacts from android phone without internet connection to windows phone with internet

  1. On android phone, go to contacts and press setting (There may be different ways of accessing this depending on android version). In Setting, click on "Import/export". Now click on "Export to storage". Now a pop up will appear saying your contacts will be exported to file called 00001.vcf (vCard file) (just an example, name may vary...). Press "Ok"
  2. Now depending on the media access interface you have between android phone and your PC (Bluetooth or USB cable), transfer this file 00001.vcf to your PC and place it on desktop or any folder.
  3. Now on your PC with internet connection, Go to your gmail account and click on contacts in the top left pane (Where "Gmail" appears just below "Google" Logo). Now in the below menu, click on "Import Contacts...". Now a pop up dialog appears for selecting import file. Click on "Choose File" button and select the file 00001.vcf from Step 2. Now all contacts from android are synced to your gmail account.

Kukke Davanagere Trip

21/12/2012 Friday

We left home at 8:30 AM in shashi's brand new innova (Perhaps first long trip) and made a stop at "New Agarwal Bhavan" @ Dasanapura on Tumkur Road and had sumptuous breakfast of idly and aloo biryani (agarwal version of vegetable pulav..).

For most part the restaurant had an air of typical south indian foodie joint except for an UPish agarwal name and a single bhaiyya server( can smell them with thier thick hair gel --> chuchundhar ka thel ).
After breaking the fast,We pressed east wards onto mangalore toll way (NH-48) built and operated by LANCO Infra. Now it is hell of a ride on this stretch almost till hassan and wont sight kunigal nor channarayapatna on the way.

Road is relatively easier on you till you reach half a stretch of shiradi ghat and wonder why this concretized curve technology wasn't adopted long ago. We didn't have to wonder too long as we hit pot holed stretch of ghat now, though there's tardy patching work in progress.

We found ourselves in Dharmasthala at around 2.15pm just in time when temple closed with due thanks to brief and wondorous stretch of ghat section.
After stomach filling temple lunch,we headed back on ghat section towards kukke subramanya and straight checked into krishna residency. We had an evening and next day morning darshan at subramanya temple and there ended our temple sojourn. Now we had reservation at sai international in davangere for next day and canceled earlier reservation at a different hotel.

22/12/2012 Saturday
We left kukke around 10 AM and after a brief stop near sakaleshpur to buy spices/coffee and dry fruits at a road side shop, we decided to have an early lunch (1pm) at our regular restaurant (Shri Krishna hotel) @ Hassan. We feared finding good hotels in arasikere and too on empty stomach !!. Below is rough map we had figured to reach davangere from hassan.

It is roughly about 205 km route and had decent hope that roads will be easier on us. But pretty much knew the state of our state highways (SH) when entered the immediate stretch on arasikere road. I can safely vouch that there is no civilized (can call as modern also) road here and wondered how an ex-PM's constituency can be in such apathy. It wont be exaggeration if i say these roads are an insult to the people!. We passed through dudda(queerly named..ದುದ್ದ),haranahalli(ಹಾರನಹಳ್ಳಿ..ever heard of haranahalli ramaswamy ? it's his birth place) and reached arasikere with pain. We had brief respite in smoother roads till we reached birur and again found us in mercy of nearly non-existent roads (state HIGHWAY 71). We passed dusky towns & hamlets ajjampura, bukkambudhi(another queer..ಬುಕ್ಕಾಂಬುದಿ) and reached channagiri at around 5pm.

SH-65 from Channagiri to Davanagere is a pleasant drive passing through shanthisagara (old name.ಸೂಳೆಕೆರೆ ), asia's second largest irrigation tank.(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shanti_Sagara). We reached davanagere via hadadi at 7PM and showed our college campus to all while passing in front of it. We checked into sai international hotel on harihar road and after brief lull(aby) & rest, myself and shashi checked into poolside restaurant for some pegged relaxation (actually loosening our nerves after fretful journey). Rest of family joined us sooner for dinner and would rate as excellent the food fare at this place. After dinner, we strolled through davanagere passing Ram & Co circle,Chigateri hospital,Gundi chowltry,JJM medical college,BDT college and hostel,MCC B block etc and returning back to hotel via Vinoba nagar and PB road.

23/12/2012 Sunday

After morning coffee and newsread, we planned to visit one of famous davanagere benne dose (ದಾವಣಗೆರೆ ಬೆಣ್ಣೆ ದೋಸೆ) joints for breakfast. As a coincidence on same day, there was an article in Hindu News paper magazine about same topic (" In Search of Davanagere Benne Dose") (see photo). We headed straight to Sri Guru Kottureshwara Benne Dose Hotel (quoted in article) opposite Bapuji Dental college and ordered around 10 plates of benne dose for 5+2(kids) of us. After much smelling of roast butter aroma for around 30-40 min (15 min wait for seats), got our promised plates. Though i am mildly cholesterol conscious these days, i didn't mind this once in a long while fare which was absolutely marvelous in taste added with mashed potato and chutney. Mashed potato adds its own punch to the taste. Also i noticed that the main cook making dosa was the same guy whose picture came in the news paper article.(wow.what a coincidence !). I think its first time that Abhi completed whole plate of dosa in a jiff sans tantrums. anyways so far so much about our dosa rendezvous.

My college (good ol' BDT engineering college) is stones throw(smaller stone..ok) from this dosa joint and we headed straight into front entrace of the college. The entire front portion has been renovated (it seems college got 5CR funds from central govt) and looks majestic. We clicked we snaps on outset and also few inside the campus near the stage in garden area. I showed different sections of college including principal office, our final year class room
electronics/computer lab, electrical lab and our spacious library building etc. I thought of reminiscing ol' days in our campus canteen and checked if coffee/tea is available.(being Sunday, canteen was open that day). Hotel guy was gracious enough to make coffee for us (less and with). We again passed through our old block hostel (i couldn't notice ananthram hotel in the corner some how..new developments i fear),JJM hostel, MCC B block anjaneya temple and finally BIET college road. We again checked back to hotel at around 11:45 AM and all wanted to take a quick nap except abhi. Abhi and eventually shreya (one of the them is trigger always !) pestered to have a swim at hotel pool. We forgot to carry any costumes and to justify that hotel staff said that pool water is not clean for swim due to adjacent civil works. So abhi had to be cooled down by letting him to get down in water for quick splash.

We left town at 3 PM after having lunch at a restaurant (Veg. only since it was vaikunta ekadashi. ವೈಕುಂಟ ಏಕಾದಶಿ) and straight on NH-4 towards chitradurga. We proceeded towards fort passing through durga town (though it is district center, it is not well developed as davanagere). Incidentally the road to fort was named after kannada author ta.ra.su (who wrote durga centric stories incuding famed naagarahavu).
We hired a guide after much bargaining and felt worth after it. He gave us bit of historical context for every nook and turn of fort (Actually it is seven walled fort with 2 walls already lost in town with remaining bits/pieces).You can browse through few snaps of important spots in the fort.
‌‌‍ above pic>>@ Kasturi Rangappa Nayakana Baagilu (Note its mix of hindu and muslim architecture).

<< @ Eknaatheswara Temple (ಏಕನಾಥೇಶ್ವರ ದೇವಾಲಯ)

>> cliff where climax scene in naagara haavu was shot (where chamaiyya mestru climbs the hillock)

So far so good...We left durga at 6.30pm and back in den at 10pm. In between,We stopped for quick snacks at kamath upachar near sira. I expected the NH-4 ride to be much  smoother and far more straighter but was not to be. NHAI (National High Authority Of India) is again into building bridge pass through at important junctions on road (probably to save innocent villagers who come in one ways due to lack of pass through). Due to this, we need to enter/exit into service road many a times breaking the cruise mode(i meant figurative, dont have cruise mode in innova..).

Hope i didn't dwell much too details and kept your interest. See ya..signin' off

My Film Making Workshop Experience

After months of dilly-dallying on joining some film making course, I finally took an unreasonable action and enrolled myself in 4 day film making workshop Conducted by Rabi Kisku Entertainment.( http://www.rabikiskuentertainment.com/)

Let me say couple of things about Rabi Kisku & Co. These folks are IIT Madras Alumni (2005 graduates i guess) who have an unflinching passion for film making and have committed themselves in it. I can imagine how hard it is for them to take this road when they could have made a successful career (As we and the world consider it to be) out of their engineering degree from a prestigious technology institute in country. But they have taken a big game in their life and not treading the well known path for sake of it.

This film making workshop is two weekend course usually conducted in St.Josephs College, Bangalore. Since I had some conflict with date of first session, I chose to attend the first session in workshop conducted at Chennai.I attended second session in Bangalore and eventually made a short movie with Bangalore participants. I was lucky enough to mind share with different people in Chennai and Bangalore.

The workshop is divided into these aspects of film making and spread over 4 days. Script Writing, Cinematography, Direction and Short movie production.

In script writing section, we get to learn the basic element of script writing, structure & format of a script etc. Well these concepts can be read from a famous book by Syd Field "Screen Play", It is informative and insightful when explained with short clips of movies shown from some interesting scripts (For eg. Little Miss Sunshine, American Beauty etc).

Cinematography is covered in another day of workshop and can learn about role a cinematographer plays in the movie and all basic fundamentals on photography. I never knew that renaissance art has made such an impact on cinematographers and in general the art of photography. Great cinematographer such as Vittorio Storaro (Dick Tracy, Reds, Apocalypse Now) was greatly inspired by renaissance artist Caravaggio. Also we learnt about different aspects of lighting and how an actor can be projected under soft/hard lights and different contexts that these lights are used. (Remember the lighting from maniratnam classics Anjali, Dalapati ??..Bright lit edges of hairline and dark lit face of baby anjali as she enters the screen for first time  )

An unexpected incident happened while we were in cinematography session. While in session, there were some visitors to the venue. One was a middle aged chinese and other a Caucasian (american?). They were being shown around by the owner of the venue.
Much to the shock and excitement amongst us, we came to know that the chinese man was none other than a well known and Oscar winning director Ang Lee of such movies as Brokeback Mountain, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Hulk. It's really an irony that we had such a distinguished guest around us while we were learning "film making".

I met many interesting individuals who were participants in the Chennai workshop and one of them was Subbu (subramanian) who is an architect by profession and film maker by passion. He is also lead vocalist/lyricist for a well established chennai band "Oxygen" (http://www.reverbnation.com/oxygentheband). To his credit, He has assisted vasanth and prathap pothan in few tamil movies and has also made few short films on his own using his cinema mode Cannon HV 40

In Chennai workshop, I had also written a script for a story idea given by Subbu. I couldn't in Chennai for the shoot but it seems they took my script when they finally shot the film. Story is about an young college kid who goes out to smoke at a petty shop and goes through some embarrassing moments.  here is the link to the script..http://www.zumodrive.com/share/923gY2UwMW

The "Direction/Editing" part of the workshop was equally interesting with many concepts thrown in such as Screen Balancing, Camera Angles, Orientation, 180 degree rule, 3 character staging etc. We also explored editing world with an overview on advanced editing tools such as Avid Liquid, Adobe Elements and Apple Final Cut Pro. It seems Apple Final Cut Pro ("FCP" in film editors lingo) is the preferred editing tool for most high budget movies.

Well now we enter the most crucial and exhilarating part of the workshop. It is last sunday of the workshop and it is movie making part of the workshop. As a group we are supposed to come up with a story, screenplay in standard format and we are provided with a professional movie making camera to make a 5 minute short movie. The group I had aligned with in the bangalore session had already come out with a story idea but did not have the script. It was so learning experience that i am meeting a totally strange motley group on a saturday evening and we together are collaborating on a movie next day !!!.
We had to arrange few resources for the shoot and rushed to commercial street to buy and left for the day with an agreement that me and saiprasad (the story author) will give a shot on structured script. I burned some mid night oil to hammer out a structured script.
On the shooting day, I left early in morning to pick the camera and helper and headed straight to Platinum City Apartments on Tumkur High way.
Saiprasad insisted that his script be taken as a base for which i agreed immediately (this is collaboration effort and i am not a boss here.) I began chipping the script according to a workable structure and had to drop many things from the ogirinal. I greatly cut down many dialogues since it does not bode well for a short fare.
We were into lunch time when script was in final shape (see script here..http://www.zumodrive.com/share/923eZTc2ND) and sat for a sumptuous lunch with our host and participant suja sukumaran (http://serenemusings.wordpress.com/)

Well, Let me tell you that film making is the most involving and sometimes muscle aching effort. At least that was the experience for us rookies. To make a 5 minute movie, we shot some 20 minutes of film with various re-takes, different sequences etc. Initially we were shooting in a linear fashion as per the script and this is not unusual for us rookies but later got profession by taking nonlinear shots. (non linear means the shots which are not necessary sequential in the script). This saves time and effort and is how it is done in actual movies. If you have restaurant scenes in various points in the script, it is all shot in one single day or time.

Oopsy toopsy!! finally we made a final cut of the movie with editor ravi  (..sweating out 3 hours.). We had made a goof up in one scene where we had turned off the mic. Fortunately it was a single actor voice missing and he was with us during edit. We made an impromptu dubbing right there and there we go..

Here is the link to the final cut of the short film..http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NqGUGisnKg4
